Endodontists in Ireland
An endodontist is a specialist dentist who only performs root canal treatments, re-treatments and root-end microsurgery using an operating microscope. In Ireland, a specialist molar root canal costs €900 to €1,250 (€720 to €1,000 after 20% Med 2 tax relief), and a re-treatment costs €690 to €1,500.

Ask a local clinic for a priceWhy a dentist refers you to a specialist
Every registered dentist is trained to perform routine root canals. However, your dentist will often refer you to a specialist endodontist when an X-ray shows:
- Narrow, calcified or curved canals where the nerve space has almost closed over with age or trauma.
- Upper first molars that commonly hide a tiny fourth canal (the MB2 canal) less than a fifth of a millimetre wide.
- Re-treatment of an older root canal where an infection has returned at the root tip, or a post or broken file fragment needs to be bypassed under magnification.
- Cracked teeth or root resorption where a 3D CBCT scan ({r(CBCT)}) is needed before deciding whether the tooth can be saved.
How the specialist works with your own dentist
When you see an endodontist on referral, they complete the root canal, seal the access cavity with a strong core filling, and send the post-operative X-rays and report back to your general dentist. You then return to your own dentist 2 to 6 weeks later to have the permanent crown fitted.
Many specialist practices in Ireland also accept self-referrals if you want a second opinion before having a tooth extracted.
