Root canal cost in Ireland

A root canal in Ireland costs €390 to €700 on a front tooth, €490 to €800 on a premolar and €590 to €1,250 on a molar (€900 to €1,250 with a specialist endodontist). Adding a crown on a back tooth costs €800 to €1,200. Because both qualify as non-routine care on Form Med 2, you can claim 20% back through Revenue myAccount.

Why quotes vary from tooth to tooth

Dentists price root canals by the number of root canals inside the tooth and how complex they are to clean and seal:

  • Number of canals. Upper and lower incisors and canines almost always have a single straight canal (€390 to €700). Premolars have one or two (€490 to €800). First and second molars have three or four canals (€590 to €1,250), often curved or narrow.
  • General dentist vs specialist endodontist. A general dentist handles straightforward root canals in-house. If roots are curved, calcified, or previously treated, they refer you to an endodontist who works with a surgical operating microscope and 3D CBCT imaging (€900 to €1,250 for a molar).
  • The restoration on top. The root canal seals the roots below the gum, but the top of the tooth still needs rebuilding. A front tooth usually takes a composite filling (€120 to €210 if not included); a molar or premolar usually needs a full crown (€800 to €1,200) so the weakened walls do not fracture when you chew.

What to ask for in your written treatment plan

  • Whether the fee covers all appointments needed to finish the root canal (most molars take one or two visits of 60 to 90 minutes).
  • Whether the final composite core filling is included or itemised separately.
  • Whether the tooth will need a post (€150 to €300) and a full crown (€800 to €1,200) afterwards, and how long to wait before fitting the crown.
  • A signed Form Med 2 receipt as soon as the root canal and crown are paid so you can submit your 20% tax relief claim.

Questions patients ask

What is the total cost of a molar root canal and crown in Ireland?

A molar root canal (€590 to €1,250) plus a crown (€800 to €1,200) comes to €1,390 to €2,450 before tax relief, or €1,112 to €1,960 after claiming 20% back on Form Med 2.

Is an X-ray included in the root canal price?

The working X-rays taken during the root canal procedure are normally included in the treatment fee. Your initial diagnostic consultation and periapical X-ray is usually €60 to €150, and a 3D CBCT scan (if needed for a complex molar) is €120 to €200.

Can I spread the cost of a root canal and crown?

Yes, because the treatment happens in stages. You pay for the consultation first, then the root canal appointment(s), and often wait 2 to 8 weeks for the tooth to settle before the crown preparation appointment.
